What a wonderful way to start the new year, kloofing down the Kaaimans River with friends and like-minded people.
19 members and their friends turned up to enjoy the day. Their names appear below:

Kaaimans1

Greg, Cheryl and Liam Devine, Fred van Berkel, Bill Uren, Maretha Alant, Joan Louwrens, Saartjie van der Merwe and her daughter Corlia, Karen van Niekerk, Stewart Stiles, Tannje Strauss, Felicity Mailer, Eugene Fichardt, Rina de Leur, Kyle and Matty Smith, and Carlo and Celeste de Kok.

The hike started from Bill and Di Turner’s place at Strawberry Hill farm. There is a well-trodden path down to the Kaaimans, which takes about 20 minutes of easy walking to reach. Very soon after reaching the river the first of many swims started.

The water level in the river was higher than normal due to recent rains so the trip in the river was an exciting and totally different swim than any other experienced before. We ventured down small rapids getting battered and bruised along the way, hopping out to walk along the river bank where possible. The entry points into the river were changed, so navigating, with Bill in the front was a bit of a challenge at times.

We had a much needed break at the halfway point, to warm up some very cold bodies and to eat birthday cake, with Eugene and Rina celebrating their special days. Then, reluctantly for some, back into the water for the final leg back to the cars at Wilderness.

There were a few shivering bodies and rattling teeth at the end of the day, but everyone warmed up after dry clothes were put on and warm drinks, food and beer were consumed at The Blue Olive in the Village.

Thanks to all for making the day so enjoyable and a special thanks to Bill and Di for giving the club access to the river via their beautiful property.
